"Hey my name is Pawel
I've been working for Decathlon in Poland for 12 years. I'm currently head of development in Poland.
The story of my project began 6 years ago when I met a priest, whose mission is to help young children - teenagers, in difficulty to integrate into society. He invited me to a summer canoeing camp in 2013. It was a time in my life when I wanted to do something for others. I decided to get involved because the project was closely linked to sport and made a lot of sense to me. I've been involved for over 5 years now. My role is to show beneficiaries that it's possible to make their dreams come true, to be with them, to play sport together.
What's interesting is that my background is similar to that of these young people. I grew up in a troubled family in a neighborhood that was pretty dangerous. A lot of my friends ended up in prison.
As mentioned above: 5 years ago, thanks to the Decathlon Foundation, 14,700 euros were allocated to this project. The money was spent on supplying the association:
15 tents
5 sailboards
Dozens of ski boots and helmets
The equipment was used for 5 years during summer and winter camps.
These camps are a crucial part of the association's program. The teenagers with whom the volunteers work during the year are brought together twice a year. There are around 80 teenagers at each camp. During these few weeks when we're together, we try to teach them responsibility, respect and universal laws. We also try to show them the benefits of sport, to help them live a normal vacation like their peers. The children are responsible for preparing meals, keeping the place tidy, and taking part in various courses such as dance and ethics.
Disadvantaged beneficiaries are recruited from broken families, families in financial difficulty, sometimes with alcohol problems, from orphanages, etc.
Over the course of the year, the association regularly accompanies the children, helping them with their homework, providing psychological support where necessary, and helping them find employment.
3 former beneficiaries now work for Decathlon
What sticks in my mind is the photo of Igor whom I met 5 years ago - a little 11-year-old boy with coordination problems - it took him 6 days to be able to ski down the blue slope: the smile on his face when he did it - unforgettable. Igor now helps the association with organizational matters.
I'm in touch with many of the teenagers who attended these camps - some are studying, some have found jobs - and I can see that it all makes sense.
Unfortunately, a year ago, the warehouse in which we stored some of our equipment was destroyed along with most of the goods purchased thanks to the Decathlon Foundation.
I decided to ask for help once again and 3000 euros were granted by the Foundation and another 3000 euros thanks to the Polish Decathlon stores in Warsaw. Thanks to this, we'll be able to replace a lot of what we've lost.
Sport has so much to offer!
